Adolf Friedrich Graf von Schack (1815-1894) based his translation of 336 quatrains on an edition printed in Calcutta in 1836. In the epilogue he critized Nicolas' interpretation, that appeared to him to be "mehr ein dicker Nebelschleier, der den persischen Text verhüllt, als ein Führer zu dessen Verständniss". The Strophen were reprinted a couple of times. A selection of 48 quatrains was included in 1887 in the 'Divan der persischen Poesie', compiled by Julius Hart (Halle, Otto Hendel, 1887). In 1979 a volume was published as 'Die Rubijat von Omar Khayam; begleitet von Persischen Miniaturen'. (Stuttgart, 1979).
Von Schack was a lawyer, diplomat and man of letters. He undertook travels to the Orient. Except from his own work he published studies on Spanish art and culture, and translations from Spanish and oriental literatures. One of his works was a translation of Ferdausi's 'Shâhnâma'. Johannes Brahms and Richard Strauss composed songs based on lyrics by Von Schack.
